Inside an American Fire Department
PlanStudio Helping Fire Departments to Pre-Plan
Let’s start with Richmond Heights Fire Department in Ohio, USA.
Where Fire Fighter Justin McGill had been searching for a solution to collect and maintain critical building information. Upon a google search, Justin found PlanStudio which he and his Chief, Mark Neumann began to use to create preplans to capture critical building information to assist a better emergency response.
What is a pre-plan?
Pre-fire planning is an important part of preparing for a fire or emergency and provides emergency services with information about a property so a more efficient and effective operation can be delivered in the case of an emergency.
“Before PlanStudio, the preplan process was very manual. Preplans were created by firefighters on paper or on hand drawn digital files, and then stored in binders or on USB drives. This process was time-consuming and inefficient. It was also difficult to keep the preplans up to date, as buildings and fire protection systems change over time.
When Justin showed me PlanStudio, I was excited and relieved that we had found an affordable solution that checks all the boxes and can better assist in the pre-planning process”.
- Chief Neumann

The Richmond Heights solution fulfills our social promise - improving situational awareness for first responders.
We hope to help more Fire Departments in the US improving their preplan process.

Orange County Information Technology’s Stephanie Boffa shared their story of success in improving their safety outcomes by implementing PlanSafe as their Emergency Preparedness System.
“When you make
knowledge easily accessible, employees are much more receptive.
Here at Orange County, we are proud of our culture of safety. Having a system in place to best support this culture makes safety effortless and keeps safety a priority”.

PlanStudio 3.3 launched at the end of August.
This update makes it much easier to keep your satellite imagery aligned without needing to re-geotag, and introduces improvements to the Portals feature that powers the multi-storey “WorldPath” wayfinding engine in our JavaScript SDK.
This wayfinding engine makes it possible for software developers to go beyond evacuation paths and deliver generic A -> B wayfinding between any two points in a building mapped with PlanStudio.
Another feature that shipped in PlanStudio 3.3 is the new Libraries panel. This update makes it easy to switch between appearances of your plan.
If you’ve ever struggled to see which features have been traced from an underlying Graphic, you can now create a drafting-only theme to overlay walls in a different colour identify multiple networks, or whatever takes your fancy.
The Libraries Panel makes it easy to switch between all your themes as you work.
No more worrying about impacting the appearance of any diagrams!
We have a new PlanSafe Dashboard which makes it much easier to see and manage your PlanSafe portals. This update takes away the need to manually log into the administration section of PlanSafe.
This latest dashboard is also the first glimpse at the new look-and-feel we’re bringing to PlanSafe. This major revamp of the administration section will make it easier to navigate PlanSafe and get things done.
We’re not ready to show that work off just yet, but we’re looking forward to when that day comes!

Q:
How long have you been working at Locatrix?
A:
I’ve been working at Locatrix for 5 and a half years now, back in the days when we were still known as the humble Concept Safety Systems that only sold Signs & PlanSafe.
I joined in the Stone Age as one of our drafters, back when PlanStudio was but an idea and PlanSafe was only just beginning to abandon Flash and coming into the digital age.
Not long after I found myself as the Product Officer in our Client Delivery team, helping lead the adoption of this exciting new technology in our own processes before finding my way into being a Product Manager for PlanSafe, a position I excitedly continue to work in today.
Q:
What’s it like to work at Locatrix?
A:
In a word – amazing. The culture, the people, the work itself, it’s all top-notch. Having the ability to work on products that make a real impact on the safety & wellbeing of people and in the indoor mapping industry which is beginning to see a lot of traction is just the icing on the cake.
Q:
How do you see the software improving how people operate their business?
A:
It’s been quite exciting seeing companies varying from small businesses to large, established, industry giants not only adopt our software but resell it as well.
A step further, it has been even more exciting to see people base their entire businesses off the reselling of these amazing product offerings and really seeing the value it brings to organisations. Between all our products, seeing the impact it has had in terms of efficiency, ease-of-use, logistical processes and large-scale training has been phenomenal and that continues to trend upwards as people realise how powerful something as simple as a floor plan can be when placed in the right context.
Q:
A:
What are you currently working on?
Not to give the whole game away, but we have quite a lot in store that we have in the product pipeline right now.
What is probably the most exciting thing and taking up the majority of my time right now is some work that we are dubbing “PlanSafe V2” – a large-scale effort to completely redesign the Administration side of PlanSafe while also removing a lot of the complexities in the process with the aim of making it easier than ever to manage and maintain.

How did you feel when you were awarded “Employee of the Quarter” and reading your colleagues thoughts on what you have achieved?
It’s always exciting to know that the work you’re doing makes a real difference, and I’m glad I could bring that to both our customers and my co-workers, without who, none of what we do would be possible.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
Still here at Locatrix, bit more grey hair, a lot more coffee, and many more floor plans to boot.

The Man, The Legend...
Q:
How long have you been working at Locatrix?
A:
13 Years! I began my journey here just like many of our employees, as a draftsperson.
Over time, I've worn several hats - from being a fire safety consultant to working in project delivery and stepping into the role of account manager.
But now, I'm thrilled to lead the sales team that's introducing Locatrix services to businesses all across Australia and New Zealand.
Q:
What has been the biggest or best project you have undertaken at Locatrix and why?
A:
There has been many but one of the standouts was in implementing PlanSafe into the Qantas portfolio.
Way back in 2014, Qantas selected Locatrix as their national supplier for emergency management. I was in a project delivery role at the time, and I was heavily involved in the onboarding process.
I'll never forget the time when I hopped on 12 flights in 5 days! – needless to say, I racked up plenty of frequent flyer points during that project.
Q:
What do you see in the future for Locatrix/PlanSafe/PlanStudio?
A:
I think we have nailed our customer’s requirements here in Australia – particularly in the emergency management industry. I’m really looking forward to seeing how PlanStudio can be adapted for other industries especially in the international markets.
Q:
How did you feel when you were awarded “Employee of the Quarter” and reading your colleagues thoughts on what you have achieved?
A:
The announcement caught me completely off guard. I was sitting next to Nathan, our Client Delivery Manager. We were quietly contemplating who the winner could be and I hadn’t even considered myself as a contender.
Reading what my colleagues had to say about me was truly humbling. Knowing that my teammates appreciated my work and had my back was a really great feeling.
Q:
Favourite tool on PlanStudio?
A:
I used to spend way too much time using the node tool in CorelDRAW to trace the outline of the building. There were some shortcuts, but none as quick as this.

All Hands Celebration
The Locatrix Mission
Locatrix is serious in its mission of keeping people safe with our kick ass technology and we realise a key part in engaging brilliant minds is making sure we still have some fun.
Our “all hands” day is all about celebrating the wins and looking into the future. A key step in this journey was establishing a ping-pong champion and it was no surprise to anyone that Declan Kenny took out this title.
Declan is an athlete in his own right, playing representative level for Brisbane Basketball club the South West Metro Pirates. Those transferrable skills were hard for anyone to overcome.
Congratulations Declan!
And Finally...
Our Partners Doing Something Exceptional
Shout out to Form1 for exceptional effort in raising $34,000 by participating in the Variety Bash, which CEO Steve Shirlaw does every year he can in his famous Lego car.
This Lego man and his team drove across Australia, covering 5550km in 11 days, stopping in at country towns along the way bringing cheer to remote communities along the way.
